Well Yesterday as you all know was Delawares opener for turkey season. I had planned on taking my 9 year old son Anthony on youth day last week but you have to be 10 to participate in the special youth hunts??? I made him a promise that on our opening day I would let him have the first chance at a bird. He has been my road dog and hunting partner since he was 3 years old so he is no stranger to the game. Well we were loading my vest and getting all our gear together Friday night after putting a few birds to bed. I got thinking about him and how he was going to hold the gun long enough to call a turkey in on us. I took him through a few scenarios and had him holding his youth model 20 gauge. It still seemed a bit heavy for him and he couldn't get low enough to rest his gun on his knee. I then started brainstorming. I came up with and idea and ran with it. I took 2 cpvc pipes and some black duct tape and made him a bipod that slid between his magazine yube and the barrel. I just took the barrel off and put it in between then slid the barrel back on and she was good to go....
We were set up on the field at 515 am and it was very windy. I waited until about 6 am to make some yelps and try to get a gobble. We heard one and his eyes got big as saucers. He was pretty far off but in all that wind I figured if he responded and we could hear him we might be ok.
After about 30 minutes of calling and him gobbling I decided to make a move and cut the distance a little. We took a logging road down the middle of the woods and cut in to a water hole I deer hunt in September. There is a nice clearing in there and its a perfect place to do some strutting. I set Anthony up against a tree with 2 holly bushes in front of him for cover and set the old avian x hen out to do her magic. As soon as I set down I let out a few soft yelps and 2 birds responded immediately. I looked at Anthony and told him to " get ready, they are close " I figured they were under 100 yards. We played a good game of marko polo for about 10 minutes and in they came... By the sound of the gobbling I could have sworn they were long beards. Any bird will do for us as a first bird. They were both jakes and one of them was about to have a bad headache. I told him to kill the back bird since he was the one doing all the gobbling. When he cleared a tree I told him I would stop him and get his head up. I let out 3 short squeaky yelps and he gobbled back at 18 yards.... My little man pulled the trigger BOOM!!!!! Dead bird!!!!!! And another memory made... What a happy dad!!!!!
Here is a link to the 9 minute marko polo game we played lol If you fast forward to when the last bird gets to the tree you can watch the shot and recovery.
