Took my dad this morning to try for a turkey. We were on 2 different birds and nothing panned out. Had them talking for sure but they must have had hens. We finally gave up around 8:45 and headed for the truck. We decided to take a ride around the farms we hunt and look around a bit before heading home since it's my mom and dad's 39th wedding anniversary. As we came to and intersection that splits the farms I told my dad to make a left instead and to go check one of my other fields. BINGO there they were. 2 Tom's and a hen. I looked at my dad and told him they are in trouble. Where they were was very easy to get to undetected. With the wind and the short pines along the edge we could get very close. We parked and hauled the mail to the woods edge. Snuck down to a bend in he woods and I leaned out and could see them right along the edge around 120 yards. I put out the decoy about 5 feet out figuring when the birds got out in the field they would all the decoy. We then worked out way through he woods edge in the small pines to about 80 yards. I payed down and dad kneeled next to a tree. I did some calling and they lifted their heads then started walking right to us. Both birds were nice mature long beards. They walked all the way to 23 yards when dad put gave him a face full of #6 Winchester long beard. He wasn't a big fan lol apparently the other long beard was since he proceeded to beat the snot out of what was left of his buddies head lol we then jumped up and gave hugs and high fives. What a great hunt. He weighed in at 21 lbs 2 oz with a 10 1/4 inch beard and 1 inch Spurs.
