Well usually me and my dad go on and annual rabbit hunt every year around the end of the season. This year we kept talking about it but it never came to light. I have had to do some extra overtime due to some unexpected bills. I was really upset that the rabbit hunt didn't happen since I don't get to spend nearly as much time with my dad as I would like with work and my own family. I talked to a few buddies and came up with a plan. We were gonna go shoot pheasants and chukar's on a preserve hunt. My father was a big time quail hunter when I was growing up. You could find him over pointers every weekend when the season and schedule allowed it. This plan was perfect as we would be hunting with dogs also. I told my dad not to make plans for next weekend and that I wanted him to go with me and a few friend to look at a new waterfowl hunting lease. I was at his house the night before eating dinner and making sure everything was lined up. When he wasn't looking I took his old browning A-5 out of the gun cabinet and swapped the 28 modified barrel out for his 26 improved. Then got his orange gunning vest and hat and put them all in my truck. I picked my dad up at 6:45 and my mom informed me he noticed his gun case was missing when he went in the closet to get his cold weather bibs. We then left to meet friends at 7am for the 50 minute ride. I had my son along as well. When we got there we all got out and started talking. You really couldn't tell by the looks of the place that we were about to go on a hunt. But my dad was listening to my friend talk to the guide anout birds and I could tell he was getting confused. I then grabbed his gun case out of the truck and asked him if he had been looking for this. He looked at me with a funny look and said " Yea, I was asking your mom if she had moved it this morning " I couldn't help but laugh. He then said " I didn't know you borrowed it " I was still laughing and I told him that I hadn't borrowed it and that his browning was in there. He said " WHAT "..... I then broke the news to him that we were going to be hunting over dogs like the old days. Its been a long time since I have seen him this excited. He didn't believe me until he asked everyone else. We went out and had and absolute blast. At the end of the hunt we sat at the trucks and recapped every single bird and point. My dad was talking to the guide and explained how we used to hunt over dogs a lot and that's when I saw a tear run down his cheek. It was such a special day. And to have 3 generations hunting together was so awesome. Plus a few great friends. After the hunt we went out to a good barbeque joint and had some good eats. All in all it was one of the best and memorable hunts I have ever been on. My father does a lot for me and it was so nice to feel like I am returning the favor.
