Well on my next hunt after killing the 7pt with my bow at our marsh lease in lower Lafourche , I find myself posed up 25' in a slash pine on my buddy's property in Washington Parish. At 7:29 I caught movement behind me over my left shoulder. I picked up a doe & she was moving in a way that said " don't shoot me, there's a buck following." I watched her as she eased rather briskly through the pines, stopping every few seconds to look behind her. Honestly I didn't want to shoot her anyway, so I waited. I text my buddy I had just see a doe & I have a feeling she's evading a buck. 8 minutes later, whatcha know out pops a nice buck. He was on her trail & moving at a steady clip. I readied my Marlin 30-30 and clicked back the hammer. When that happens it's a pretty good chance I'm sending a deer to deer heaven. I'm watching him move through the pines and looking for an opening. He stopped a couple times, but I waited till I felt he would stop long enough for an ethical shot. About his 3 or 4th pause I set the crosshairs on his on shoulder & let the 150gr rip. Boom goes the dynamite, looked like a solid hit. Looked like he was favoring that on shoulder as he headed into the bottom. I heard a loud crash & assumed he was down right there. I waited 30 min then went look. Nothing, no blood, no deer. I walked in the bottom for 30min where I though he went in, nothing. He crossed a firelane so I though I'd at least find blood on it, nope. Went back to my buddy's house and waited till he got back at 10AM. He & I along with his lab headed back to the spot I shot. We were walking down the firelane as I was pointing things out. We stopped in a spot where I could see my climber & I was walking him through the hunt. His lab bailed off into the bottom where we were standing. I told him I thought he was about 50yds farther down. He walked over to where his lab went into the woods & saw her standing by a log, he called & she stayed. He rejoined me & we continued our convo. I decided to head farther down the lane & he went to get his lab. Again he called as she stood by the log. He began to follow me, but turned back one more time to get his lab & realized the log was actually my buck. He called me back & I can honestly say I was quite embarrassed. I really thought he was 50yds farther down the lane. I was very relived to find him. He never dropped any blood. Bullet entered the on shoulder breaking the bone & lodged in the ribs on the opposite side. He was tore up inside, hit him with a heart shot. 160#, 16" spread, 7pt.
