Well yesterday had started off like many of the other days since the turkey opener. I was after the swamp chickens again with my sidekick. I was locating birds every place we stopped. The only problem was they either were all with hens or they weren't buying what I was selling. Me and Anthony decided to call it a day around 10 am. On our way home I looked at a field that buts up to our farm and there were a bunch of turkeys out there and a few strutting. Well I knew that we had a logging road that ran down about 100 yards from that field and I was pretty sure I could get them to come in the woods.
Wee set up about 75 yards inside the woods and placed the avian x at 14 yards since it was kinda thick in there. I wasn't sitting for maybe 10 minutes and I called 2 hens to 10 yards and they hung around scratching. When they would turn around and feed the other way I would softly cluck and purr. All the sudden we heard a gobble. Then another and another. It started to rain and I put my slate away and got my diaphram in. I called a little and they were coming. I was steady whispering to Anthony to be still. He then spoke up and told me he could see them. I asked him what they were doing and he said " They are all puffed up and fat " *lol* I reassured him they are gonna come in. I dont think I waited 2 minutes and I had 5 jakes all gobbling in my face between 15 and 25 yards. I figured, I have my little hunting partner with me and I am ready to catch flounder and go crabbing!!! Plus to be honest we all know the jakes are better eating *lol* BANG!!! He was flopping and we were giving high fives... Then all of the sudden he was up and gone!!!?? I jumped up and gave chase.... But then there was silence. I looked back to see where Anthony was realizing I had just left him at the tree. I took a few more steps and there was the turkey trying to get away. I pulled the gun up but then I heard Anthony yelling and I wasn't sure where he was so I just ran him down and jumped on him. *lol* I wish we had that on camera *lol* When the deed was done I turned around to see Anthony smiling from ear to ear.... Wow dad that was awesome, we did it!!!! We went back to the tree and packed the decoy up and started for the truck.. Of course he wanted to carry the bird!!! That lasted about 20 yards. We laughed and reminisced the whole way back to the truck. Mainly about today and the one time I put a big long beard on his shoulder to carry out and it flipped him right on his back!!! *lol* It was only a jake that tipped the scales at 17 lbs with a 4 1/2 inch beard but man you would have thought it was the state record!!!! I love this stuff. I hope I have many more years to share this hobby with my little buddy.....
