Well with the dismal weather reports I was uncertain if I was gonna go get wet today. My dad was up to bat and he hasn't shot a turkey since the the first year Delaware opened a turkey season. I had a camera man lined up but the weather scared him off *lol*. I got up at 4:30 am and called dad. The sky was dark and no stars in sight. But its opening day. I called him back around 5am and he asked me when I wanted him there. I told him 15 minutes ago. Even with the cloudy skies I didn't want to be outlined crossing the field to set up. I had seen a tom and hen yesterday morning in this field so I was hoping they didn't go to far. At 5:45 it started raining pretty good and my father was saying "this figures". I looked at him and said " Hey you never know, we might be done by 6:45". We crossed the field and that was a job in itself since it was just tilled *lol* I deployed the Avian X breeder hen and we got behind a dirt hill about 20 yards away. As the light crept up on us the sound of rain drops was broken by a thunderous gobble. It was under 100 yards. I recently started using a diaphram call again because it so nice not to have to move anything when the birds get close. In years past they choked and gagged me badly from the vibration. Well with the rain my slate calls were out of the question. I softly yelped with the call and he was firing back and cutting me off. I then heard a hen also. Not long after the hen flew down out into the field and was followed by the elusive swamp chicken. I called to him a few more times and I heard another hen coming from my right and close. I mean real close. She passed us at 10 yards and headed to the decoy. I cant say enough about the avian X decoy. It sure had her fooled. The combination of her calling, me calling and the decoy were way to much for him. He came in on a string. The whole time I was recording on my phone. It was beautiful. When the bird bumped the back of the decoy I told dad I was gonna get him to stick his head up. I did the old kee kee and he wasnt listening to a word I said *lol* Finally he turned side to and I told dad to" kILL HIM ". BOOM went the old 870 and down went my fathers second long beard ever. You talk about pumped. We high fived and hugged and ran out to check him out. As We replayed the video we noticed that the memory on my phone was full and the shot want on camera. But that was ok. We have it burnt into our minds. I even get to remember this hunt every time I put out my new decoy. *lol* She took a healthy load of copper coated 6's to the chest and neck. *lol* It sounds like a muraka shaker but thats cool I am good with it. What a hunt. I had and absolute blast.
