Got to the camp in the rain Saturday around lunch. Went check the plot watcher closest to the camp. Lots of deer in the mornings and mid day. Not so much in the evenings, so we decided to save that for the Sunday morning hunt. Caught a break in the rain and went to another stand. Then it rained again. Even had thunder. At last light a doe was walking toward us in the woods. Kaleb put her in the scope and shot when she quartered. She hauled but toward us then turned right running down the 4 wheeler trail. We gave her some time. I couldn't tell by her reaction if she was hit. Couldn't find blood in the rain. Went to camp and got our dog. He never been on a deer trail but blood trailed a few of Kalebs squirrels and rabbits. We brought him to the shot and he went the wrong way.... I put him on the 4 wheeler trail and it looked like he was on something. Nose on the ground. Even stopped and licked some spots but we never saw blood. Walked around the edge of the 4 wheeler trail and nothing. He was disappointed. Figured he missed. He talked about it till he fell asleep.
Next morning we went to feeder by the camp. Wasn't long a doe came out. I told him to watch it in his scope and imagine shooting it. It walked into the woods where we couldn't see it and 3 more does came as she went in. They kept looking back and he said I know there is a buck coming. I tried to keep him calm and focused on there shoulder imagining the shot. I said they are not going any where just take your time. Then a racked buck walks out behind them. They are 100 yards away. He gets in the middle of the 4 wheeler trail and looks our way. I told him to stay focused on his shoulder and take your time. He shoots and the buck falls! He was so relieved!we go check him out and he is a 5 pt. would have been a 6 but a tine was broke off.
We get back to camp to clean it and eat. Then decide to go fill feeders. We went where we hunted the evening before and I spotted her white belly in the woods. Only about 100 yards from where he shot her. Shot was a little forward but heart shot. She should have dropped in her tracks. She was still good. It was in the low 30s that night and the coyotes didn't find her. So the freezer is filling up quickly.
