He has been pumped up to kill a deer. Kaleb was with in laws on a Tennessee trip so he had all the hunting to himself. Tessa and Ethan wanted to come up for the week also so I had to get the camp up there. Problem was the road in is a slop pit! Only way to do it was to pull it in with a tractor.
So Monday I made the 4 hour run and hauled my 4wheeler and tractor up there. Got there at dark. Road is to bad for me to haul tractor trailer in as well so I had to park on side of the hwy and unhook the tractor trailer then hook the tractor to it and haul it in. Tessa was working a consulting job in Birmingham. So she met us in meridian that night and we got a room. (Oh and on our way to the hotel, I came around a curve and a doe was in the other lane walking across. I heard her hit the back door. She must have just stuck her nose out. Just smeared the mud down the side of the truck. Got lucky!) I got up early that morning and ran the 4 hours home, hooked up to camp and drove 4 hours back. Unhooked on hwy, went get tractor and hooked up to camp and towed/drug it in. Then drove my truck in. I went check cameras I had on some trails and a mineral lick for over a month. Had some good deer on them. I was feeling good about getting Jacob his 1st deer. We hunted the feeders all week and never seen a deer. The last evening we went on a ladder stand on one of the trails and only had about 5-6 turkeys fly up by us to roost. That was the high light of our trip. We hunted hard. He was determined but he did sleep in one morning. Long mornings and evening in the stand is ruff. We were trying to catch some midday movement with the full moon. I hope I didn't ruin him. We didn't get to hunt till Wednesday and it warmed up that day. It's always tuff on warm days after a string of cold days. That was my 1st trip there that I didn't see a deer. I hope he gets a chance to come again on a cold day. On a good note the camp worked flawlessly. Just need some rain to fill up my water tank or no rain to dry the road. Lol
Forgot I only had one chair in the ground blind. Had to sit on the ground. It was miserable and I forgot to bring another chair the second time we hunted that spot! The things a dad puts up with!
Always good to have a good gateman!
