Well I have been very fortunate to have some very good hunting ground do to some great friends. I am a member of a few hunting clubs and also run 2 of them. I know we probably arent doing much since we dont have giant property in this state but we do what we can and only shoot bucks if we are gonna mount them.
I started baiting in july and the trail cameras were slow fdor me this year. I just couldnt pattern a good buck and really didnt see many. But riding around the perimeter of the farm was showingme that the deer were there they just werent near me. I knew once the crops came off the fields the deer would move in. Finally in october I got a picture of a deer that interested me and I knew this was the deer I was gonna hunt.
He was not really showing up every day so I figured I would wait until gun season to put the pressure on him. I hunted muzzleloader and never got a glimpse of him. When november rolled around he was showing up more since I had alot more bait on my site than just corn... The ladies were in there thick. I again decided to wait until shotgun to hunt my stand locations. I hunted the outside edges of my hunting areas so I didnt bump him.
Finally when shotgun rolled around it was game time. I hunted the 14th-20th every day morning and night. Even had a few all day sits in there. No sign of him. I saw plenty of deer and a few shooters but they were to far. I passed up on alot of 120 class deer. Just not what I was looking for.
Well On the 21st I set up in a homade ground blind me and my son built. It was cold and I had 5 doe's at 80 yards when the wind started swirling. When the doe's walked in I looked at my phone and it was 6:58. I decided I didnt want to mess up the spot and was going to go to my big box at the other end of my side of the farm. As I was walking a was thinking about all the bucks I had been seeing about 275 yards from my box stand. The property makes a corner there and the deer cut it and have the North West wind in their face so they can scent check the whole place as they walk into the wind. I said screw it. I was gonna setup on the ground watching the crossing. I sat down and got my gun on the sticks. I looked at my phone and it was 7:04. As I put it away I heard a stick snap to my right and I saw a heavy rack cruising 55 yards inside the edge of the lane. I saw a kicker on the right g-2 and I knew it was the deer I was looking for. I mouth bleated 3 times as loud as I could and he wouldnt stop. He finally stopped when he was down wind inside some hollys and I took a shot. He ran a short distance and stopped. I could see his tail going crazy so I knew I conected. He then walked towards the lane and was about to cross. I was ready and waiting for another shot. He then turned and bolted towards the stone road crashing like hell. I knew he was down. I walked over to where he was standing when I took the shot and there was good blood.
I followed it a short distance to a nasty little holly cluster choked with briars and devils walking sticks. There he laid. the buck I have been after. I pulled him out and took a few pictures.
I had a buddy stop and help me get him loaded and I just sat there like a kid in a candy store. Here are a few more pics of him in the truck
I took him home and to my suprise my little buddy was home from school with a bad cough and you talk about excited. He was going nuts. You know I had to get a pic with the kids. They were very happy.
In the end I will honestly say that I am very lucky to have the places I do to hunt and even luckier to have a wife and family that supports me and allows me to get into the woods as much as I can. Without them I wouldnt be able to do the things I do.
I also pulled my trail camera cards and I had some pretty cool pics of my deer from this week.
