Trouble showed up on the land near the first week of bow season. He was listed as a shooter as his body and antlers indicated that he was a 3 year old.
My first encounter with him was on October 5, 2013. Here is what I wrote in the log book:
October 5, 2013
Don. Late morning hunt at Crow Foot. In stand and very hot at 9:23 am. "Trouble" was here yesterday at 9:50 am.
October 5, 2013
Don. Evening hunt in the hot box, I mean Green Box Stand. If you want to kill deer you have to hunt them where they are going to be. Took a good look at the trail cams and Trouble may be a great 2.5 or a lightweight 3.5 yo. I will have to see him in person because some pics look good and others small. First deer showed up at 6:30 PM. Small 8, followed by a small 6. They left and then I saw Pushy (good 8) and Amigo who shed his velvet. Then the first two returned followed by Trouble (good 8) and Ho Hum a long spike and one other deer, unknown. I got video of the early shows but could not get video of Trouble. Bow in hand at 12 yards broadside. What can I say? I wanted it on video, so I let him walk.
I truly expected to kill him the next day. Deer were very calm and unaware they were being hunted at the time. Then he started only showing up at the Crow Foot Stand in the bottom. I hunted him a few times and got busted once or twice by deer I never saw. Then he disappeared.
On January 14, 2014, Trouble was at the Poison Ivy Tree Stand at 5:48 AM. He made several other appearances during the week. He was one of the bucks on the plot when I was hunting on January 17, 2014 but at the time he appeared daylight had left and deer were running all over the place.
On January 18, 2014 I moved to the Killing Tree to get closer to the deer. Most of the bucks appearing the previous evenings were staying on the north side of the plot until after dark. Early a button buck, doe, and fawn came from the north. They were followed by a 2” spike from the east. It was getting to be deer thirty, that perfect time for bucks to appear when a 2 yo 6 point came from behind me on the west side. I was getting ready to pick up the gun and put the cross hairs on him and say Bang for the practice when on my east from behind I saw another buck coming. His hair was standing up, ears pinned back and he walked strait over to the 6 point and locked horns. They pushed around just a little with the 6 point backing off. At this time I was thingying my youth .243 rifle. Trouble walked to the feed and stood at a half turned away stance. I put the cross hairs just ahead of the last rib and fired. He looked like he was going down but bucked his hind legs up about 6 foot in the air. Then he ran into the cutover. I heard him running in the leaves, stop and start again then nothing.
I got out the tree and went back to the camp to give the deer a little time just in case, but I felt like he was dead. I went back to look and searched for about 45 minutes. While I was out there I talked with my son-in-law, Kevin. He said he was coming out to help me. I went back to the camp and waited on them for awhile and my brother Eddie said he was on his way to help also.
When Kevin arrived with my daughter and grandkids we went to look, Eddie joined us shortly after. We even went to the creek to try to pick up a blood trail there. We never found a drop. We decided to put off the search until morning. Trouble was living up to his name even after his death.
The next morning Eddie and I went to look. After about twenty minutes of looking I could hear Eddie talking but couldn’t understand him. When I got closer to him I asked if he found blood. He said no but I found your deer.
Trouble had turned west and fell behind some logs with his beely facing away from where we looked the night before.
We took pictures loaded him up to a video and cleaned him. Then we rested up for the evening hunt. Story to continue….see Fiction When it is posted
